Blogging has exploded in popularity over the past decade. It’s become an incredibly powerful platform for people to share their thoughts, experiences, and expertise with the world.
As a professional blogger myself still in the early stages, I wanted to give an inside look at both the exhilarating highs and frustrating lows I’ve encountered so far in my blogging journey.
What Draws People to Blogging
Before we dive into my own story, it’s helpful to understand why blogging has become such a phenomenon recently. A few major factors are driving its growth:
- Self-expression – Blogging lets people share their innermost thoughts, opinions, and stories without filters. It’s a cathartic outlet for creativity.
- Flexibility – You can literally blog about any topic imaginable. There are no restrictive rules or formats.
- Reach – Blogs can gain huge global audiences interested in your niche. It’s a powerful way to get your voice heard.
- Income potential – Successful blogs can earn serious money through advertising, affiliate marketing, etc. It appeals to the entrepreneurial-minded.
- Low barrier to entry – Starting a blog is simple and extremely low-cost. This makes it an appealing side hobby.
With these benefits, it’s no wonder blogging has exploded. But the reality of being a blogger isn’t always glamorous. Let’s explore that next.
Why I Started Blogging
I only began blogging this year, so I still consider myself a complete rookie. However, I’ve always had a lifelong passion for writing and storytelling.
As a kid, I would fill up journal after journal documenting everything from my daily activities to my innermost hopes and dreams. Writing has been an incredibly cathartic outlet for as long as I can remember.
When I discovered the world of blogging, it felt like the perfect medium to share my writing with a much wider audience. I was drawn to the idea of connecting with readers who have similar interests, struggles, and perspectives.
Blogging also provides a platform to share my knowledge and thoughts on topics I’m passionate about – whether that’s finance, health, ideology, or many others. I love expressing my unique personal lens on these subjects.
So while making money from blogging seemed like an cool added perk, it wasn’t my main motivation. I was attracted to blogging primarily for the joy of connecting through my writing.
The Thrill of Growing an Audience
One of the greatest joys so far has been seeing my audience slowly but steadily grow. With every new subscriber, comment, and social share, I get more and more motivation to keep creating content.
There is something uniquely rewarding about seeing my blog traffic and engagement numbers tick up each month. It’s reassuring to know my work is resonating with readers out there, even if I don’t yet have a massive following.
Hitting milestones felt hugely gratifying. It gave me the confidence I was on the right track and that my writing did have value to share.
Seeing reactions from readers who truly enjoyed a post or found it helpful means the world to me too. Hearing I made even a small positive impact inspires me endlessly.
So while some say not to focus too much on shallow metrics, I won’t pretend that it isn’t hugely motivating to see my blog’s growth. However, with this growth comes its own challenges…
The Steep Learning Curve of SEO and Promotion
One learning curve has been figuring out how to promote and optimize my content effectively. There is so much to grasp about on-page SEO, social media marketing, email newsletters, and more.
When starting out, I naively thought “If I build it they will come.” I’ve since learned content promotion is a huge portion of a blogger’s job.
Some of what I’ve had to immerse myself in includes:
- Keyword research
- Crafting SEO-optimized titles and meta descriptions
- Optimizing pages for topics I’m targeting
- Creating shareable images and graphics
- Leveraging hashtags strategically on social media
- Building relationships with other influencers/bloggers
- Running ads and social campaigns
- Building an email list and newsletter
- Leveraging affiliate programs
- And so much more…
Promoting content to drive traffic, leads, and exposure has been a monumental learning process. I’m still only scratching the surface of effective blogging marketing tactics.
But I’ve accepted this is all part of the job. Learning these skills will pay dividends further down the road. Patience and persistence here are key.
Dealing with the Early Lull of Low Traffic
Tied to promotion struggles, battling the discouraging lull of low traffic when first starting out has been difficult.
In the beginning, it was downright crickets out there as I published my first few posts. Reminding myself that slow organic growth is natural for new sites helped me push through initial discouragement.
But it’s still hard not seeing the results you hope for right away after pouring effort into creating solid content. Some weeks it seems impossible to build any momentum no matter what I publish.
During these traffic lulls, focusing on smaller victories like a new email subscriber or social follower keeps me motivated. And doubling down on promotion to spread my work further rather than giving up.
Over time, the ups and downs of traffic even out into a steadier upward trend overall. But it takes serious patience and persistence to power through the early struggles phase that all new bloggers endure.
Dealing with Comparison and Self-Criticism
It’s also all too easy to compare myself to other more successful bloggers. Occasionally seeing someone find huge viral success fast makes me second guess my own abilities.
Thoughts creep in like:
Maybe I just don’t have a distinctive enough voice or vision for my blog to ever gain a big following.
What makes me think I have any valuable perspectives to share compared to the top influencers in my niche?
Why bother producing content if no one cares what I have to say?
These kinds of unhealthy comparisons and self-criticisms can seriously undermine motivation. It’s important to tune out this detrimental mental chatter.
The truth is we all start somewhere. With consistent hard work, I know I too can eventually build a successful blog that makes an impact. Early struggles are just part of this journey.
My Go-To Tactics for Sparking Blog Post Ideas
Possibly the toughest ongoing struggle for bloggers is coming up with compelling blog post ideas consistently. This makes perfect sense. Unlike other types of creative outlets like painting or music, the medium itself – written words – is the art form.
Being creative day in and day out crafting new written content is mentally taxing. On some days, I sit down at my laptop brimming with inspiration, typing furiously to get all my thoughts out.
But other days, I battle epic writer’s block staring hopelessly at a blank screen. When inspiration dries up, it can feel impossible to churn out posts.
Over time, I’ve learned a few go-to tactics that help get my creative juices flowing when I’m feeling stuck:
Pulling from My Own Experiences
Often the best post ideas sprout from things I encounter in my daily life or personal thoughts I have on certain topics. Any experiences I have encountered can spark great story and lesson ideas.
For example, my popular post on why I choose not to celebrate holidays came straight from my own thoughts and I felt like sharing something personal would entice the reader. These real-life stories resonate because they are personal and from the heart.
So if I’m ever struggling for inspiration, I reflect on my recent experiences for something compelling to transform into a post.
Paying Attention to Trending Topics
Staying plugged into what topics are trending on social media and in the news can provide great fodder for posts too.
While I don’t cover celebrity gossip and fluff, bigger cultural moments related to my niche often inspire ideas.
For instance, if the stock market has a major shift in prices, it may inspire me to share my hot take as an avid trader and investor. Riding bigger trending conversations lets me tap into what people are already discussing.
Checking Google Trends
Beyond just social media trends, I’ll also use Google Trends to objectively identify rising searches around certain keywords and topics.
The hard data reveals what people are actively interested in and curious about in a given moment. I brainstorm creative ways to cater to these search trends with my own unique spin.
Piggybacking off Competitors
One shortcut I’ll admit I rely on is looking at what influential blogs in my space are publishing. Seeing the latest posts from the “experts” provides inspiration.
I don’t outright copy their ideas. But writing my own alternative perspective acts as a starting point. Tapping into the zeitgeist of what’s already resonating in my niche works well.
